Make Money Organising A Quiz Night

By Mike Tants

Organising a quiz evening can be a great and reasonably easy way to raise money. This article will talk about how to get punters, how to get a great quiz and how much you can make.

Advertising is key

There are two things youll definitely need for a successful quiz. Once is great quiz. The other is punters! To make sure you have enough people to make it worth your while you will need to advertise. Where and how will depend on who your target audience is. If you are planning on running the quiz in a pub, ask the landlords permission and put up some posters.

An excellent method of collecting email addresses of potential quiz participants is to put a large jar or some other container on the bar with a sign telling people to drop their business cards in for the chance to win some great prizes. This can quickly allow you to get a good number of email addresses so you could email them details of you quiz night.

If the quiz night is going to be held for a parents evening at a school, or targeted at some other club or group of people then send out letters or flyers telling them about the evening and prizes (which I'll come onto later).

The All Important Quiz

Assuming you have had a successful marketing campaign you will now want to write or buy a great quiz.

If you have the time you could create your own quiz, but a lot of people don't have the time or inclination for this so the other option is to buy a professional quiz pack online. There are plenty to choose from and can be of a much higher quality than if you tried to create your own.

If you want to create your own quiz pack then remember these simple rules... don't make the questions too difficult or too easy. You want to separate out the winners, but you want most people to be able to answer around 40-50% of the questions. Try to be inclusive, so in a music round don't just ask about recent music that the older generation won't know. But above all - keep the questions interesting!

Prize

The better the prizes, generally, the better the crowd! Some people will only be interested in the challenge of a quiz, a battle of wits against their friends but a good prize for the winners can only help. If you are holding the quiz night at a pub you may be able to convince the landlord to give the winners a free drink, after all you are generating him extra takings. For charities and fundraisers try to get the prizes donated or if nothing else, cash prizes are usually welcome (although this will have to come out of the takings)

How much profit can you make?

Obviously, more people = more money. Say you attract 50 people which is easily possible. Charging them an entrance fee of 3 will generate 150 immediately. Pub owners will also see a large increase in bar takings.

If you have hired a hall out or its being held in a school hall you could then start selling beverages, snacks and chocolate bars. That 50 people will probably spend between 2-5 each, resulting in an extra 100-250.

The bottom line is that you could make anything from 150 to 400 from a single night, and that is assuming you only get 50 people turning up. Double the number of people taking part and you can double your takings. So get 100 people there and you could make 800! Pretty good for a night's work!
