The Art of Chuck Rosenthal - His Still Lifes

Chuck Rosenthal is an oil painter. His beautiful still life paintings adorn homes and offices and galleries. Although he does not paint still life exclusively, he does paint them brilliantly, with contrasting colors, gently cascading sunlight playing on fruits, wine, baskets, bowls, glass and flowers.

A definite quality that makes Rosenthal's work extraordinary is the texture visible in each painting. For example, in "Daffodils and Grapes" the artist places the silky cool texture of grapes falling out of a cup on the rougher texture of a dark linen tablecloth, and the smooth cool feel of the vase filled with frilly daffodils, alive with color.

Another interesting composition that shows such contrasts is "Fruit Harvest," where a well used basket is next to a cool metal goblet. The goblet alone is an astounding piece of work - the artist used a wide variety of hues from very dark to nearly white to express the metal piece. In the foreground are pears that have fallen out of the basket - one feels if one put his finger on them, they would feel like ripe pears, in contrast to the hard shiny apple in front of them.

The composition of "Fruit Harvest II" leads the eye around the painting from the bright fruit in the foreground to the textured bowl behind, then to the smooth cool bottle of wine and finally to the brocade tablecloth that foretells the rest of the room in which this painting is set. One can imagine brocade drapes and thick carpets and elaborate furniture in the scene. The contrast of the bright fruit and dark background pulls one into the painting.

"Teapot and Fruit" shows us a coarse teapot, thrown on a potter's wheel to judge by the shape and surface quality, with grapes and apples in the foreground. The table suggests the kitchen - a cutting surface rather than a cloth covered dining room or parlor. Light seems to seep through the dark blue wall in the background - perhaps a heavy cloth covering a window.

In "Roses from the Garden" we see a very darkly tinted glass bottle holding three differently colored roses. The background is very dark, almost black, yet the bottle still stands out away from the wall, because of the light falling on it - a very nice touch in this painting. The softly painted pears in front of the bottle lend depth to the painting.

Still Life has been a favorite subject of many painters over time, and Mr. Rosenthal's paintings combine some of the old style with his new style. This artist has a colorful style full of life even though the subjects of the paintings are motionless and often in shadow.

Give Crede the Gold Glove

Joe Crede has been magnificent at third base for the Twins in 2009. Not only is his fielding percentage the best in the AL, but he also has the least errors at the position. In addition to this, there's a stat called the UZR, which measures a player's effectiveness at a position relative to how many runs it costs his team. Crede's UZR here is best of breed.

Aside from the regular offensive contributions that Crede gives to the team, his UZR and his fielding stats have been top notch, and even better than his hitting. This has been invaluable to the Minnesota ball club.

As far as the UZR is concerned, there's a more telling stat called the UZR 150. This essentially tells you how many runs a player has either saved or cost his team over the course of his last 150 games played at that position. Crede's UZR is unbelievable, somewhere between 25 and 30. This means he's saving the team a run once every 5 or 6 games. No one else comes close to this defensively in the AL, only Adrian Beltre, whose UZR is 10 less, between 15 and 20.

With dominant numbers like this, you have to wonder why Joe Crede doesn't get more respect. In fact, hardly anyone realizes just how good he is at the position.

Crede is one of those players who is often overlooked. Since his hitting numbers don't stand out and players are credited for their offense more than their defense, Crede gets little due for what he does.

Crede should be the hands down favorite for the Gold Glove, and I'm going to predict that he won't win it. It's the nature of the beast when it comes to these things.

Unfortunately, the Twins get little respect when it comes down to voting. Look at snubs like Luis Castillo, Justin Morneau, and Joe Mauer, all of whom deserved Gold Gloves and never got them.

The Gold Glove voting, like voting for most awards in sports, is sugarcoated with bias. This is unfortunate, especially in the face of such a great campaign like Crede's at 3B this season.

The Birth of a Legend

It was a streaky season indeed for the New England Patriots. Having lost a home game to New York and then having lost the team's star player, Drew Bledsoe, things were looking bad for the Pats. The Colts were looking better than ever before, but the Patriots somehow destroyed them by a score of 44 to 13.

Things were short-lived for the time being though. The next week, the Patriots were dominated by the Dolphins, having lost by 20 points. New QB Tom Brady's 86 yards were dismal compared to his performance against the Colts the week before. New England was now 1-3.

The Patriots played San Diego at Foxboro the next weekend, and the Chargers were 3-1, with a dangerous duo between QB Doug Flutie and RB LaDanian Tomlinson. Things were looking bleak for New England.

The lines all showed San Diego as the heavy favorites, as New England was still without Bledsoe and had looked horrible against Miami the week before. Somehow, New England came into its own, and things have never been the same ever since.

This game was a true showdown in every sense of the word. Each team seemed to alternate touchdowns or field goals, but somehow the Chargers found themselves up 10 points later in the game. It really looked like things were over, but we decided to stay for kicks.

Unbelievably, New England scored a field goal, and then a touchdown with nearly no time left in regulation, which tied up the game. Tom Brady led the charge and he looked as good as Bledsoe, if not better.

In overtime, the Patriots and Brady took control of the game. Brady almost brought about a game winning touchdown, but the Pats were stopped short inside the 10 yard line. This was fine though, as Vinatieri's game winner from 23 yards out was enough to win the game for New England.

For real, indeed. Brady finished the game 33 for 54 for 364 yards and 2 TDs. He was now putting up Bledsoesque numbers. There was something different about Brady, he seemed so calm in the pocket and didn't make the Bledsoesque blunders. On October 14th, 2001, Tom Brady came into his own and has never looked back. And I was there.

Running a quiz night: Definitive guide

Getting started:

Preparation is the most important ingredient - the subject matter should be popular and quiz questions need to be interesting. There is a load of free resource online enabling anyone to write their own quiz, but this can take a very long time and often it's more worthwhile buying a ready-made quiz pack.

Rounds:

I recommend that most quizzes should begin with a picture round. This allows you to go to each table (if in a bar or pub) asking if they are going to participate and also lets them know the quiz will be starting imminently.

In a bar / pub walk to each table asking if they will be joining in. If they are, hand the sheets to them (usually the picture round and an answer sheet) and collect their money.

Questions: The questions in a quiz need to be challenging, accurate, guessable and interesting. There is no point in setting a question that everyone will know the answer to. When I write a quiz I try to make sure that most people / teams will get at least 50% correct, but I never want anyone to get 100%.

I want the answers to be guessable, so at least those taking part have a chance of getting it correct, even if they're not sure. Another good tip for writing quiz questions is to try to keep the questions interesting. If someone doesn't know the answer, they should want to know.

Crucially, quiz questions must be accurate! I once went to a pub quiz and there was a question along these lines: What is the name of the barrister living at No. 10 Downing Street (at the time Tony Blair was PM)? The answer given was Cherie Blair, but there was a small uproar as some teams had answered Cherie Booth - the name she used professionally. This illustrates how badly thought out questions can cause problems. If a team lost by one point because of this they would have been quite upset (after all, a pub quiz is a serious battle!)

Quiz Master Attributes:

If the quiz is being run for a large number of people, a pub or bar, or fund raiser for example, the quiz master should be confident speaking to a fairly large audience. Injecting some chitchat and humour can be good too, but remember that people are there for a quiz, not a comedy act. Also, they should be fair but firm - the quizmaster's decision is final!

Format:

How the quiz is formatted will vary depending on the event.

For pub quizzes, social and fund raising events, I find that giving out the picture round first whilst collecting the entrance fee works best. Obviously a night in with your friends is a lot more informal.

If it's a tie...

If teams are deadlocked at the end of the quiz the best way to decide the outcome is with a tiebreaker question. Make things more interesting by asking each team to select someone to answer it.

Get the person nominated to the front, and ask each team member the question for them to answer. Most of the time this will result in the rest of their team yelling what they should answer and creates a fun way to decide the outcome.

Prize giving:

Now that the winner has been decided, handing over the well-earned prize can also be done in a fun way. Don't just give them a free drink or some money - entice them to bet the prize for a sweeter one!

They could select from an envelope, gamble on successfully completing a Play Your Cards Right game, answer another question - the options are only limited by your imagination.

Top Ten Hiking Essentials

Here is a list of must have items sure to make your outdoor experience safer and more enjoyable. These are applicable for dayhikes and backpacking trips.

Obtain a map of where you will be hiking. Usually, you can pick one up at the park visitor center or ranger station. You can also download maps from various websites. Having a good map will not only will not only prevent you from getting lost, but it can help rescuers find you if you suffer an injury.

Purchase a map reading compass and learn how to use it. Once you've learned how to orient the park map and the compass, you will know what direction you are facing, how to easily correct your course and get back on track.

Two, one liter bottles of water so that you stay hydrated. This is your minimum required intake per day, but since hiking is physically demanding you will drink more, especially in warmer climates. You can survive for a month without food, but only two or three days without water. You should have some sort of water treatment with you. I carry Aqua-Mira, which is a liquid purifying agent.

Take a bit more food than you think you will need, to get you through an extra day if need be. This can easily be accomplished by having a few whole food bars with you, each of which constitute a complete meal replacement. Important for maintaining energy output.

Having a few additional clothing layers will help you stay warm and dry. Depending on the season, temperatures can fall quickly around sunset. It's a good idea to outfit with synthetic clothing. That way, if you get wet they will dry faster. Wet clothing in cold temperatures is a recipe for disaster.

Take a flashlight with you. You may want to purchase a headlamp so that you can be hands-free. Every once in a while, you will be out a bit later than expected. Negotiating a hiking trail in the dark is dangerous.

Have a personal first aid kit and know how to use everything in it. Suffering an injury in the wilderness is no fun. You can assemble your own with supplies from home, but include triangular bandages and moleskin or mole foam. You may want to consider taking a basic wilderness first aid course.

On rare occasion one must light a fire in the backcountry as a matter of survival. I've been on a kayak trip where someone overturned and they were soaked just as the temperature started to drop. Do not light a fire unless absolutely necessary. Bring matches and a lighter in a waterproof case and use caution to avoid wildfires.

A folding camp knife will serve many a purpose. Be sure that the one you choose has a blade that locks when open. I've seen knives that don't lock take off finger tips.

Don't forget the sunblock. Bring some sunglasses as well and you may want a cap with a visor or brim for extra UV protection. Your skin and eyes will be much happier.

Leatherman Crunch: The Unique Multi-Tool

Leatherman is a well known brand in multi-tools. They have become the standard. Leatherman's innovated pliers design have been copied by many. The Leatherman Crunch introduced a new pliers design. Locking pliers also know as vice-grips. Anyone that uses tools often knows how valuable locking pliers are. It is like having a third hand. While needle nose pliers are useful, vice grips allow you to free up your grip and apply more leverage on clamping.

The Crunch is smaller than the Wave. The design is well though out. It pops open and assembles in seconds. When assembled, you get a very nice vice-grip that functions well. The Crunch comes with Leatherman's standard 25 year warranty. That's if the Crunch fails in workmanship within 25 years, Leatherman will fix it or replace it for free. I don't see the Crunch failing on me any time soon.

The Crunch has 13 functional tools built in. I will not talk about them all but I will talk about the main tools and the ones you will be using the most. The vice-grips, serrated blade, large flat-head screwdriver, and file are the tools that will see duty the most on the Crunch. The Crunch does not have nearly as much tools as the Wave or Charge but I consider the Crunch a complimentary multi-tool. That may sound strange since to purpose of multi-tools is to fill many roles when needed, but sometimes, it is good to have 2 different multi-tools that have only the tools you need. Some people, like myself, have no need for a corkscrew so I should not carry a multi-tool with things I do not need. It would just add weight.

The downside to the Crunch is the lack of complimentary tools. Through the function of it's design, all of the other tools are smaller and limited. Also, what I did not like was the fact that it had 3 size flat head screwdrivers. The big flat head will be the most used. One thing that impressed me was the lock. All of the secondary tools lock firm and solid. You could use the screwdrivers to pry if you are in a grind. The adjusted knob for the vice grip can be removed allowing access to a hex drive. This makes it possible to expand the Crunch into a more versatile tool if coupled with a bit driver. You have to buy it separate. Do I see myself expanding this tool? No. Is it nice to have the option? Yes.

The Crunch is not perfect but it is a great complimentary multi-tool. You have you portable toolbox if you couple this with another multi-tool. Something small, say a Leatherman Juice would go nicely with it. It is definitely not as complete as a Leatherman Charge or Wave but it's still a gem and I recommend it. The Crunch provides something different in the big market of multi-tools. For me, the locking pliers was enough to sway my purchase. At around $50, it's a bargain.

Harley Davidson HOG The Limelight With A Momentous Bike Release And Anniversary Celebrations

The year 2008 was Harley Davidson's 105th anniversary which isn't a particularly well recognised milestone I'll admit but that didn't stop them celebrating it with style as they have done every 5 years since God Knows when. It also happened to be the 25th Anniversary of H.O.G. - the Harley Owners Club - which was arguably more significant.

Several events were planned by Harley Davidson to mark the occasion. Kicking off a full four days of partying was an organised State-Wide ride-out. Beginning at 105 separate dealers across the country the run was planned to culminate at the Milwaukee lakefront and follow naturally through to a non-stop festival of activities and music. They also opened a museum dedicated to the history of the brand and produced a limited edition styling pack for 14 separate models in their range.

The 105th Anniversary models all featured exclusive two-tone paint schemes in copper and black with copper vinyl inserts tastefully inlaid into the saddles and copper shield decoration on the tanks and air cleaners. Some of the top models also featured something new. Something which made me stop and think when I heard it. Harley Davidson factory fitted Brembo disk brakes with advanced ABS! For a minute I even thought I was going to faint.

They didn't just fit and modify an existing system either. Instead they designed much of it from scratch even going so far as to hide most of the mechanism within the hub of the wheel. The result was a Harley with wheels that looked exactly as they were meant to but with remarkably efficient ABS.

Top of the Harley Davidson range in 2008 was the CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide. This is a bike with more features than an American sitcom. It has a 160 Watt stereo system, Satellite Navigation, Cruise Control and even heated leather seats! With the addition of ABS that doesn't even lock up when applied on gravel it becomes something truly magnificent.

The Twin Cam 110 motor behind this half tonne behemoth is an extraordinary 1803cc V-Twin with a manual 6-speed gearbox. It puts the standard UC Electra Glides 1583cc to shame and is big and smooth enough - it's fully rubber mounted - to make even the longest journey's a total pleasure.

The only real competition this motorcycle has in its class is, in my opinion, the Honda Goldwing. On paper they have an amazingly similar spec, even the engine sizes almost match. But in reality let's be honest, one of them has infinitely more style than the other. In fact it takes image into a completely different league. And with brakes that actually work I can't imagine there's much choice left at all and the votes will have already been cast.

Yang shocked the world and probably himself by beating the world's best golfer, and maybe the greatest golfer of all time, Tiger Woods, by coming back from 2 strokes down Sunday to win the PGA Championship. Yang is the first Asian player to win a Major, the first player to beat Tiger Woods when Woods was tied or all alone in the lead after 54 holes of golf. Golf enthusiasts cheered, David took down Goliath, 12 never struck for Cinderella, No. 110 took down No. 1.

Is this good? I don't really think so. The PGA heavily relies on Tiger Woods and the sentiment on the street is that Woods simply isn't effective as he was, and may never be again.

Tiger hasn't lost it, he's won 5 tournaments this year, coming from 5 strokes back on Sunday to win one, and coming back from 8 shots down Thursday to win by 3 strokes on Sunday. But, as I said, casual golf fans don't get that. In fact, most sports fans probably don't get that because he hasn't performed in the biggest events, the Majors, the moneymakers, the events that pull in the biggest ratings.

For the short-term, Yang's victory makes for an interesting story and may feed the media with some fuel for now. But the 2009 PGA season is devoid of stories. A lack of a Tiger win, and Tom Watson's falling short at the British Open both make for some major disappointments compared to what could have been.

Yang will probably make few headlines anytime soon, and the once "sure prospect" of Woods beating Jack Nicklaus' record for majors one is suddenly not such a sure thing anymore.

While there are a few more months of golf left, there are no majors, and only serious golf enthusiasts will track these events. Fringe fans will go back to watching other sports, and will be far from enthused about the 2010 golf season.

Tiger must bounce back in 2009. He is the face of the PGA, and any story lines lacking Tiger Woods will do anything but help the sport grow.

We need Tiger to be Tiger and everyone else to watch in amazement as he wins Majors, no offense to them, but fans don't want Y.E. Yang, Angel Cabrera, or Lucas Glover to win. They want Tiger, and Tiger needs to deliver.

St. Pierre vs. Silva: Potential Reality or a Dream?

The MMA scene has had its share of classic battles, but they really only seem to come along once every few years. This is the type of fight that features two of the top fighters in the sport, where no one truly has an idea as to who will win.

It seems like both Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre are dominating their competition at the middleweight and welterweight divisions respectively. Both have been untouchable of late, and you have to wonder what's next for them.

Once "GSP" and Thiago Alves' fight came to a close during UFC 100 it was obvious "GSP" had manhandled Alves and was going to walk away with yet another dominant victory. He did. St-Pierre's next opponent will be the winner of Mike Swick and Martin Kampman at UFC 103. Two guys who've fought their way to the top of the division and one will get a shot at Georges St-Pierre. Although both men are very capable MMA fighters it's really hard to say either of them have a chance at defeating the champ. St-Pierre is simply in another class of fighter. When the Swick v St-Pierre or Kampman v St-Pierre fight comes and goes we'll probably all be left with a burning question, whose next?

The same goes for Anderson Silva. After he easily beat Forrest Griffin last week, many were wondered what was next on Silva's list of things to do. Griffin was considered the toughest opponent in Silva's class (even a former light heavyweight champ at that) and Silva beat him with no problem.

Silva will await Dan Henderson for his next fight, according to the UFC. Henderson is coming off a nice win against Michael Bisbing, which in and of itself got him another shot against Silva. Still, many are discounting Henderson's chances and predict an easy win for Silva. And where does Silva go from there?

Despite the fact that Silva can roll with the best in his class, he still isn't willing to move up to the light heavyweight division and accept a fight with its champ, Lyoto Machida. Silva and Machida are great friends and he'd prefer not to fight such a close friend.

The more that the two establish themselves as elite fighters, the more likely it seems that the stars are aligning for St. Pierre and Silva fight. Imagine the speculation and uproar this would cause in MMA circles.

It's honestly hard to say who would win in such a situation. Both are masters of their class and could easily put on a show for the ages. This is the type of fight that every MMA fan dreams about.

5 Fighters To Beat Brock Lesnar

In the aftermath of Brock Lesnars 2nd round TKO victory over Frank Mir the prevailing attitude toward him from mainstream fans has experienced a sudden and seismic shift. Before his past two fights many were questioning whether his credentials justified giving him a shot at the title, with some even unfairly comparing him to EliteXC YouTube sideshow attraction Kimbo Slice. In the aftermath of Lesnars UFC 100 victory the new question surrounding the former WWE champion has become who can beat this guy? Lesnar definitely is a freaky physical specimen combining size and strength with speed and agility. Hes also progressing by leaps and bounds as a fighter with every bout. Still, hes got a big deficit in experience to make up on the job as UFC heavyweight champion.

Lesnar is no doubt a handful for any opponent, but in many ways Randy Couture was a perfect matchup for him. He had a significant size advantage against an opponent from a wrestling background and without a well developed submission game. Frank Mir made a serious tactical error, thinking that he could absorb a beating on the ground and wait for a submission opportunity. Lesnar had gameplanned Mir perfectly, and implemented a fight plan that allowed him to pound his opponent mercilessly while avoiding the risk of submission. Neither observation is meant to diminish the significance of Lesnars victories, but to underscore the fact that hes not unbeatable. Heres five fighters who could do it:

1) FEDOR EMELIANENKO: 'The Last Emperor' is until proven otherwise the best heavyweight in the sport. The former PRIDE champion has striking power, submission mastery, and may be the toughest fighter mentally in the sport. Fedor might get taken down by the new UFC heavyweight champ, but hed reverse it from the bottom and win via armbar. Lesnar's inexperience would be readily apparent against the well traveled Emelianenko, and he'd finally face an opponent who could test his ability to take a punch.

2) ANTONIO RODRIGO NOGUEIRA: Nogueira would present Lesnar with another formidable challenge. The former Interim heavyweight champion has equal, if not superior, BJJ skills and has proven to be tougher and more durable than Mir. His five career losses are all via decision and came to the absolute highest level of competition (Fedor Emelianenko twice, Frank Mir, Josh Barnett and Dan Henderson). The UFC heavyweight division is notoriously thin, but among the current crop Nogueira is by far Lesnars worst matchup.

3) JOSH BARNETT: Barnett is another unlikely opponent for Lesnar, due as much to his recent positive drug test in California than anything else. Still, Barnett could be the worst matchup in the sport for the new UFC champ. Lesnar is likely the more powerful of the two, but Barnett is an imposing physical presence himself at 63 250 lbs. Barnett also has a solid wrestling background, with the added dimension of his sizable submission repertoire. As his career has progressed, Barnett has become a more patient and tactically sound fighter and his standup game has improved significantly. Perhaps Barnett's greatest weapon against Lesnar is his wide knowledge of 'shoot wrestling' submissions that are very effective and tough to learn how to defend.

4) ALISTAIR OVEREEM: Overeem is bigger than Lesnar"260 pounds and 65 tall--and Mirko Cro Cop suggests that hes the *only* fighter in the world who could beat Fedor Emelianenko at this point. Hes got great standup including a kickboxing background that could cause Lesnar problems, as well as solid ground fighting ability. Hes yet another heavyweight that is unlikely to bend to Dana Whites contractual demands, and currently has a relationship with DREAM in Japan and Strikeforce in the US. Still, hes a dangerous matchup for any fighter on the planet.

5) RANDY COUTURE: Lesnars win over Couture was far from decisive, and it didnt have anything to do with the age disparity. Couture got caught with a big shot and it cost him the fight. Until that point, he was more than holding his own. He was making his opponent work hard, had the edge in the striking exchanges and had opened up a cut over Lesnars right eye. Granted, itll never be a favorable matchup on paper for Couture but at the same time Lesnar in no way proved his categorical superiority over The Natural. Couture's toughness and cerebral approach to fighting could make the rematch a different story entirely.

An intriguing matchup down the road could be against Croatian striking machine Mirko Cro Cop. Cro Cop has battled injuries over the past year or so but if he could come close to the form he demonstrated in winning the PRIDE Open Weight GP he could be another formidable challenge. At his best, Cro Cop is simply the most devastating striker in the sport.
