By Xavier Toolhausens

The trio of billiard games are a family of three types of games where a person playing tries to smack the ball into another ball, series of balls, or into a pocket. All contests have one thing in common: they are all played with a solid, slate table wrapped in felt. Another thing in common is the fact that they all need for each player to hit the balls with a stick. This stick is used by each player to smash the ball and knock it into another ball, balls, or specific location on the table.

This collection of contests were first played in the 14th century in parts of Europe. But, there is heavily debates over the exact invention of these games, France or Great Britain seem to be thought of as the birthplace. Either way, by the 1500's, these games became widely played and well-known in all the pubs and drinking establishments anywhere that people existed.

Billiard balls have been manufactured of a host of different materials throughout the years since the games were invented. In its early days, billiards was played with balls made of clay. Then, in the 19th century, billiard balls were manufactured from ivory from elephant tusks. Then, elephants were disappearing at an alarming rate, and therefore, people desired to find other ways to make these balls. And then in the 19th century, billiard balls were constructed of Celluloid, that was actually the first variation of plastic harvested for production of goods. After that, experiments were completed to discover the building of billiard balls from a bunch of different plastics. Today, billiard balls are manufactured from a plastic resin consisting of Saluc, clear acrylic, and polyester blends.
