Dustin Nippert Comes Through for Texas

By Luke Blanchard

Dustin Nippert revealed his justification for keeping the number five spot in the Texas Rangers' starting pitching rotation in the Rangers' five-2 win on top of Toronto in the 1st portion of Tuesday's doubleheader. Next up, Brandon McCarthy, returning for his 1st appearance since leaving the rotation in June for the inactive list.

Nippert showed far superior finesse than in his previous start last week against the Yankees. In the Bronx, he let up 11 base runners (4 hits, 7 BBs) and got 11 outs. On Tuesday afternoon, he pitched out of trouble to secure his fifth victory of the season and third as a starting pitcher. Nippert allowed 5 hits, and walked only one. He lessened his ERA as a starter to 4.43 and overall to 3.91. It was his third quality game in his most recent five appearances.

Nippert claimed there really wasn't much variation concerning how he threw last week and on Tuesday: "Simply able to throw strikes. In the Bronx, I suppose I pitched one curveball for a strike. The bigger predicament I put myself in, I tried relentlessly to get beyond it. I was truly going the wrong way. I continued walking guys, trying to create that flawless pitch.

"Today, I was able to throw it ahead in the count, late in the count. Keep them off my fastball."

Insisted skipper Ron Washington: "I do not think he was overthrowing. He was balancing with his change-up and his curving pitches. Increased the speed of his fastball."

Washington and Nippert mutually confirmed Nippert was not playing to protect his role in the rotation. Furthermore Nippert said he'll gladly start or come in from the bullpen. Because the Texas Rangers are in playoff pursuit, each player's role augments in significance.

"I simply want to assist this franchise," he said. "It's pleasant for us that we possess more arms currently. Whoever's effective you can go with.
