Why The Difficulty When Purchasing Manchester United Tickets?

By Greg Holler

It has become very difficult to buy Manchester United tickets which is quite different then even just a few years ago. Nowadays demand is so great that Manchester United tickets have become a scarce commodity.

Manchester United is the defending champion in the Premier League and the upcoming season has potential to be one of the best ever. Teams such as Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal will provide some tough competition in trying to win the title and preclude Manchester United from becoming champions for the forth time in a row.

Manchester United did lose two of its most popular players in Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, but nevertheless it is one of the most popular teams in the world. Just last month on its trip through Asia, Manchester United drew more than 200,000 spectators. The number of passionate fans following the team seems to grow every year and not just in the United Kingdom.

The increase in popularity has come with a downside though: it has become more and more difficult to buy Manchester United tickets. Although Manchester United has one of the biggest stadiums in the United Kingdom (with a total capacity of 76,212), almost every game is a sell out and Manchester United tickets have become scarce due to a number of factors.

The large number of season ticket holders means that only a limited number of tickets are available for every game. This is even more true for some of the big games against the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, the local derby with Manchester City, and some of the Champions League matches against other top European teams. The small number of tickets available are sold to members of the One United fan club, which enter a ballot for every game that they want to see. Becoming a member is easy because all that is required is to pay the annual fee but with the limited number of tickets available, anyone getting tickets through the ballot should consider themselves fortunate.

It is very unlikely that more Manchester United tickets will be available in the near future. The team is unlikely to decline in popularity even if the recent successes (three Premier League titles in a row, Champions League Winner in 2006/2007 and Runner-up in 2007/2008) cannot be repeated and there are no plans underway to expand Old Trafford.
